Winter

Winter comes in two shades. There is dazzling, sparkling winter, with the sun dancing in the icy blue sky and the snow glistening like a hearty quilt of pure white crystals. This is the winter you want to be a part of, to make snow angels and feel the bittersweet sting of the fresh, crisp air on your cheeks.

Today is the other side of winter. An opaque, milky filter overhead leaves the world bathed in a sinister, flat shade of grey. Absent the brilliant spark of the sun, the day old snow already looks tired and unwelcome, flecked with icy pellets and tossed aside in clumps where boots and shovels have tried, unsuccesfully, to obliterate it.

It is a day to turn on the lights to ward off the gloom, to curl under a blanket and dream lazily about spring. It is a day like so many other winter days in the past, when you can't help but ask, "Why the hell do I live in Wisconsin?"

And it's three weeks until winter officially starts.
